"Ready. Set. Play."

Making Play Possible

Play is on the decline throughout America and is disappearing from homes, schools, and communities.

  • Between 1999-2009 on a typical day, kids spent more than 7 hours on screen time.
  • Only 1 in 4 children have 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
  • In neighborhoods without a park or playground, the incidence of childhood obesity increases by 26%.

Too many kids are missing out on the childhood they deserve. That’s why Nathan's is partnering with KaBOOM! to launch the "Ready. Set. PLAY." program, bringing balanced and active play to kids across America.

In addition to being a Play Day sponsor, between September 1 and October 12, 2014, Nathan’s is contributing 5¢ from each purchase of specially marked hot dog packages to KaBOOM!, up to a max contribution of $200,000, in an effort to help give children the playful childhood they deserve. Nathan's will also be building a playground and gifting an imagination play system to provide additional places for children to play.

Through "Ready. Set. PLAY." Nathan's is able to help KaBOOM! bring balanced and active play opportunities to children who need it, and celebrate active lifestyles in communities nationwide.

Play Day Schedule

As part of the “Ready. Set. PLAY” program, Nathan’s is hosting a series of Play Days across the country to help celebrate those groups who have made a commitment to support the importance of play.

They’re bringing old-fashioned fun to many neighborhoods and schools, and their respective community members. Kids, parents, teachers and community leaders are rolling up their sleeves and playing – celebrating all the “playmakers” who are making play possible in communities around the country.

For Children

Kaboom-kids-playing-1 We know that Play Matters. Play can transform children—from sedentary to physically active, bored to mentally active and solitary to socially active. For kids, a playground is much more than a just a playground.
  • It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker and muscle-builder.
  • It’s a castle, a cupcake shop or a rocket ship that will help propel them toward a healthy, happy life.
Far too many of today's children are not getting the play they need to thrive.
  • One in five American kids have a mental illness.
  • One in three is obese or overweight. U.S. students rank 23rd in the world in science skills, and 31st in math.
Active play can help children:
  • Develop motor skills and coordination
  • Increase cognitive capacity
  • Improve classroom performance
  • Increase creativity and
  • Increase problem-solving abilities

For Communities

Kaboom-kids-playing-2 Society’s well-being begins with a child’s well-being and play is fundamental to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult.
  • Play can help children develop the ability to overcome challenges and adversity. We know from our work in disaster impacted areas that play is critical in restoring their childhood and resilience in their community.
  • When we make sure that our children’s lives are filled with play, we all benefit: our communities will be healthier and happier today, and our society will be stronger and more resilient tomorrow.
