| May 18, 2006, Joey Chestnut, a 22 year old civil engineering student from San Jose, CA devoured 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes Thursday to set a new American record in the Las Vegas qualifier of Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Chestnut's record tops Sonya Thomas' mark of 42 HDBs in 12 minutes, set on July 4, 2005.
Last year, Chestnut placed third to Takeru Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest of 2005.
"I'm going to push harder on our Independence Day to take the title back," said Chestnut, who is 6'6" and 230lbs. "My brother is in the National Guard in Iraq and there will be a lot of people behind me."

The Fourth of July event, which is open to the public and which is sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive eating, will take place at Nathan's Famous on the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Those seeking good position are advised to arrive before 11 am.
